It contains the active ingredient Acetaminophen, and this is the generic name for the drug.

It can be purchased without a prescription, and does not irritate the stomach like other medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen. It is supplied in time release caplet form, meaning that the drug is released over an extended time period. This means that the medication need not be taken as frequently as other pain killers.

Tylenol Arthritis Pain does not appear to have any side effects, but if you have an existing condition alongside arthritis you should consult with your doctor before taking it or you are taking other medication. Tylenol should not be taken with other pain relieving medication, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, prescription medication or any other product containing acetaminophen.

Many arthritis sufferers have found some pain relief from taking Tylenol Arthritis Pain, so it may be worth discussing this with your doctor or physician.

It is a proven fact that heat helps relieve the pain of arthritis. With this in mind, a thermal material has been developed that holds the body’s heat within a specified area. For those suffering from swollen and painful joints, the arthritis relief gloves now being produced can give them a much wider range of motion and greater flexibility and reduce pain.

Used for arthritis sufferers as well as those who have repetitive motion problems in their joints, the arthritis pain relief gloves offer support for the muscles whilst gently warming the affected areas. The gloves are designed to cover the muscle, ligaments, tendons and metacarpal bones in a protective material. These arthritis relief gloves are usually worn at night while the sufferer sleeps. This helps prevent the stiffening of the joints that can be a nightly torture for those who have acute arthritis. The arthritic relief glove has proven itself so effective that the material is being used to create support sheaths for other parts of the body which are potentially affected by arthritis. Knee wraps are available, which can be worn during your working day and which help keep walking and other daily living activities from becoming unbearably painful.

The arthritis relief material has been fashioned into ankle and elbow braces as well. These arthritis relief gloves are much more effective than the old methods of heating rice filled pads to provide the necessary heat to affected areas for pain relief. The gloves and other pain relief wraps are long lasting and washable. They are available with velcro adjustment strips so can be made as tight or loose as you need. Usually these arthritis relief gloves will cost between $10 and $30 depending on the brand and special features offered. They are available at local pharmacies, major retailers and online directly from the manufacturers.

Hip arthritis is generally caused by wear and tear of the hip joint- the protective cartilage in the joint wears away to expose the bones, which then rub against each other, causing pain and further damage.

Hip arthritis can differ from other forms of arthritis in that it does not always follow a natural progression; sufferers report that the severity of symptoms can fluctuate month by month, and that these can be influenced by the weather and climatic conditions. This means that it can be difficult to determine the progression of hip arthritis.

Hip arthritis generally affects those over 50 years old. People who are overweight tend to be at greater risk of developing it, and excess weight can exacerbate the symptoms. Past injuries or trauma to the area, or fractures to bones around the hip joint, can be contributory factors in developing hip arthritis. There is also thought to be a genetic link.

Symptoms of hip arthritis are; pain and stiffness in the hip area, particularly on exertion, affected walking gait and a limited range of motion in the hip.

If you suspect that you may be suffering from hip arthritis, consult your doctor, who should carry out a physical examination and arrange for x-rays to be taken to determine the extent of the condition.

Treatment;
Anti-Inflammatory medication (NSAIDS) may be prescribed to reduce symptoms such as pain and inflammation. These can include prescription medications or non prescription medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

Corticosteroids (symptom-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs or SMARDS) may be prescribed. These can be taken orally, applied to the skin in cream or gel form or given by injection.

Lifestyle changes such as weight loss could be beneficial in reducing symptoms and pressure on the joints, and can help to prevent hip arthritis developing.

Walking aids may help mobility and reduce pressure on the joint, such as a stick or cane used in the opposite hand.

You may need to limit activities which cause pain, although certain activities may be beneficial, such as swimming, which supports the joints. There may be certain exercises you can carry out to strengthen the muscles surrounding the hip joint and improve flexibility- a physiotherapist may work with you to devise a suitable exercise program.

Surgery may be required in advanced cases of hip arthritis. The most common types of surgery preformed are;

• Total hip replacement, involving the replacement of the ball and socket joint with a metal and plastic joint. This can be particularly useful for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.

• If the arthritis has only affected the lining of the joint rather than the cartilage, Synovectomy surgery may be offered (removal of part or all of the joint lining).

• An operation to reduce bone marrow pressure and increase the flow of the blood, known as Core Decompression, may be suitable in some cases.

There are a number of home remedies which have found to be beneficial in treating arthritis.

Symptoms can be reduced by drinking raw juices; celery, red beetroot and carrot are particularly good. Raw juices are alkaline, which helps to dissolve the deposits accumulated around the joints and joint tissues. Pineapple juice can also benefit, as the juice contains bromelain, which is an enzyme proven to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Some foods are thought to help alleviate arthritis symptoms. Bananas are a source of Vitamin B6, which can reduce pain and inflammation. Lime can also be beneficial, as it contains citric acid, which can dissolve the uric acids responsible for some forms of arthritis. The juice is best drunk diluted in water to avoid the bitter taste! Coconut milk is also thought to be beneficial for arthritis sufferers. Avoid excess caffeine and overly spicy foods, although Cinnamon is thought to have arthritis relieving properties.

Honey has also been proven to reduce symptoms of inflammation and stiffness, and Cider Vinegar is very effective at breaking down the joint deposits caused by uric acids.

A small daily amount of cod liver oil can slow the degeneration of joint cartilage and tissue; try consuming 1 or 2 teaspoons of olive oil a day. Garlic can also be effective, as it contains anti-inflammatory properties. Cooked or raw garlic is equally effective.

Castor Oil has also shown some benefits in reducing the symptoms of arthritis; ideally it should be boiled over a stove burner and taken with fresh orange juice each day.

Epsom salts also help break down uric acids in the body, and are also a source of magnesium, which aids bone growth. If the body becomes deficient in Magnesium, it is less able to use and absorb calcium. Try adding 3 cups of Epsom salts to a hot bath, and soak in it. Have the water as hot as you can stand it, and keep topping it up as required. Whilst you are in the water, gently exercise your joints.

Many people have found some relief by bathing in sea water. The natural iodine found in sea water can alleviate the pain of arthritis. Iodine can help repair tissues and regenerate the skeletal frame. It also regulates the acid- alkaline balance in the blood. If you are not able to access the sea, relaxing in a warm bath in which a cup or two of salt has been dissolved.

Spinal arthritis is also known as Spondylosis. It is generally caused by degeneration and wear and tear, although can also be triggered by injury or spinal surgery. It is thought that there may also be a genetic link. Spinal arthritis can affect any area of the spine, and due to the high number of nerves present within the spinal structure can be very painful.

Symptoms; You may notice increased stiffness in the spine, which can be worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity. There will also be pain, which may be exacerbated by movement and which may come and go. There may be additional pain or numbness in the neck, shoulders, arms or legs, including the Sciatic nerve.

Movement of the spine may be limited and you may find bending difficult. In extreme cases, the spine may become deformed. Often, bony growths occur which can form ‘spurs’, which can cause increased pain or restriction of movement. You may also notice a ‘crunching’ or clicking sound or sensation on moving.

If the arthritis develops in the lower spinal region, it can affect the nerves to the legs and buttocks. Arthritis in the cervical area can similarly affect the arms and shoulders.

If you think you may have spinal arthritis, consult your doctor, who may refer you for an x-ray for diagnosis and the extent of the damage.

Treatment; As with other forms of arthritis, there is currently no known cure, but a range of treatments are available to relieve symptoms.

Medications which may be prescribed include anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids or painkillers.

Losing excess weight will help to reduce pressure on the spine and soft tissue. Diet can be important; eating calcium and nutrient rich foods can help maintain bone density and strength and slow the rate of deterioration. Exercise has also proven beneficial in improving flexibility and relieving pain. A health professional or physiotherapist should be able to put together a suitable exercise or diet program for you.

Heat or ice treatment applied regularly has also proved to relieve pain and discomfort in sufferers.

Arthritis of the spine can cause the invertebral discs within the spine to deteriorate, which may then require further treatment. The joints of the spine can be affected by formation of bony growths on the spine, which may be removed by surgery.

Having spinal arthritis need not restrict you. A lot of people experience only minimal symptoms, and pain can be managed with appropriate medication and support.

The treatment of arthritis by holistic medicine is becoming increasingly popular. Once dismissed as mere fantasy or even dangerous, even doctors are now being forced to accept that holistic medicine has been shown to have many benefits in the treatment of chronic conditions such as arthritis.

Holistic medicine approaches are that diseases tend to develop from several different causes, varying from person to person. Contributory factors for disease development also include imbalances caused by environmental, mental and other physical factors.

Physicians practicing holistic medicine always try to find the root cause of any disease, and patients will usually undergo a variety of diagnostic tests, including examination of diet, digestive function, immune system, stress levels and emotional/ mental condition. The idea is to treat the body and mind as a whole- hence ‘holistic’.

Holistic medicine usually involves treatment from a range of natural or homeopathic remedies. These are also supplemented by a change of diet/ detox program, proper nutrition, a program for the reduction of stress levels if required and maybe even counseling.

Chinese herbs are often used to restore energy and balance to the body’s system- Chinese beliefs are that disease in the body is caused by obstructions which affect the flow of energy through the body to the organs. Other treatments such as massage and acupuncture may also be used.

The patient may also find meditation to be beneficial, in both reducing stress levels and pain. Various supplements, such as minerals, vitamins or herbs can provide relief from pain and swelling and tend to have very few side effects.

Holistic medicine tends to work on treating the whole body and mind, in the belief that imbalances in one area will impact upon others. Many arthritis sufferers have found considerable relief through these methods.

Once a person is affected by Arthritis, it can continue to affect them for life. There is unfortunately no cure for Arthritis, but there are several medicines available which can help to alleviate symptoms. Some work as pain relievers, others reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis, and yet others control the disease itself. Arthritis sufferers may be prescribed just one or a combination of drugs.

Painkillers or Analgesics
Painkillers come in different strengths, from those that can be bought over the counter to the strongest ones which must be prescribed by a doctor. They may also contain anti-inflammatory medication.

Ibuprofen
Rheumatoid arthritis in particular causes pain from inflammation, which can be eased by taking Ibuprofen based medication or other anti-inflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen also provides some pain relief, but there is a risk of ulcers if it taken over a long period of time. Ibuprofen can also irritate the stomach, so is best taken with food.

Acetaminophen
Osteoarthritis, on the other hand, is often accompanied by very little inflammation. Acetaminophen based medications relieve the pain but not inflammation. There is less risk of irritation of the stomach which can be caused by ibuprofen, and less likelihood of long term damage. However, if you are taking blood thinning medication such as Warfarin, or have a history of liver disease, then Acetaminophen based medication should be taken with caution.
Other painkillers include Aspirin and Codeine.

Glucosamine Sulphate
Glucosamine Sulphate is the same compound produced by the body and found naturally in cartilage and connective joint tissue. Cartilage lines the joints and acts as a natural shock absorber. As the body ages, its ability to manufacture Glucosamine reduces, which can lead to joint problems and eventually arthritis. When taken as a supplement it can stimulate the natural manufacture of Glucosamino-glycans, which can improve and repair joint function, lead to greater flexibility and prevent further degeneration. It can also help to reduce joint pain caused by arthritis. There are few side effects associated with Glucosamine.

Prescription Medication

Prescription Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
NSAIDs help to reduce swelling in the joints and inflammation and also provide pain relief. These include ibuprofen and aspirin based medication prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation. More NSAID’s include Naproxen, Diclofenac, Piroxicam, and Nabumetone. Newer types of NSAIDS have recently been developed, such as Celebrex, Rofecoxib and Bextra. These are classed as COX-2 inhibitors and are designed to lessen the risk of stomach irritation. Side effects can include the risk of cardiovascular problems, so if you have a history of heart disease or strokes, you will need to discuss this with your doctor.

Corticosteroids
Corticosteroid medication are either injected directly into the arthritic joint (corticosteroids) to reduce pain from osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, or given by mouth (Prednisone) to reduce the inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis. However, the Corticosteroid injections, although effective at treating the condition, can cause damage to the cartilage, so are usually limited to one or two injections in a year. It is also recommended that those taking steroid medication have annual flu and pneumonia vaccinations.

Anti- TNF & Biological Response Modifiers
These drugs work by blocking the reaction of a chemical known as tumur necrosis factor (TNF). TNF is thought to exacerbating the inflammation and degeneration prevalent in inflammatory arthritis. They include Enbrel, etanercept, infliximab and adalimumab, usually administered by injection or infusion.

There are some associated side effects, and they won’t be suitable for everybody. However, people with psoriatic arthritis and very severe rheumatoid arthritis may find these drugs beneficial. They are often taken in conjunction with Methotrexate.

Disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) These are often used to treat forms of inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
They include immunosuppressants which slow down the activity of the immune system. This can therefore slow the progress of the disease and can be instrumental in reducing the amount of damage it does. They are often used very soon after the condition has been diagnosed. These include leflunomide, sulphasalazin, ciclosporin and methotrexate.
However, the side effects can be severe, so use must be carefully monitored by a doctor.

Diet The importance of a healthy diet cannot be underestimated, and will enable the body to heal itself from within. It is thought that some dietary carotenoids can alleviate arthritis symptoms. Carotenoids are nutrients found in foods such as sweet potatoes, pumpkins and other yellow, red, deep green and orange vegetables.

Being overweight can exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis, so a reduction of weight if required would be beneficial. Excess weight can place extra stress on load bearing joints, especially hips and knees. Even a relatively minor reduction in weight could have a big impact on relieving pain and discomfort, and maintaining a healthy weight can help to prevent arthritis developing. Exercise can be difficult for arthritis sufferers, so low impact exercises such as walking and swimming are recommended.

Regular exercise can also increase joint mobility and function, plus reduce joint stiffness and pain. Targeted exercises can also alleviate symptoms and increase joint function; a physical therapist should be able to work with you to plan a suitable exercise program.

Massage This includes light kneading or gentle stroking of the affected muscle to stimulate increased blood flow to the area. This will provide temporary relief from the symptoms of pain and discomfort. Make sure that you use a massage therapist who is familiar with the condition as the affected joints will be very sensitive.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machine This is a device which can be placed over the affected area. This then directs mild electrical ‘pulses’ to the nerve endings in and around the affected joints. Although this doesn’t reduce inflammation it helps to relieve joint pain by blocking the pain messages to the brain.

Joint supports Some people use a brace or splint can ensure that joints are rested and not subjected to overuse, which could exacerbate symptoms and pain. If you would like to try this, ensure that a brace is fitted by a qualified physical therapist or doctor.

Heat and Ice Packs; These have been found to provide some pain relief, but use should be discussed with your doctor or physical therapist to determine which kind of treatment is best for your condition.

Arthritis isn’t a condition that only affects humans. It can also affect our pets too. It is believed that one in five dogs in the US suffers from arthritis, and arthritic pain is the most common sources of chronic pain.

Since your dog can’t tell you how he’s feeling, you will need to monitor him closely for the tell tale signs he may be suffering from arthritis. These signs include decreased activity levels- he may show less interest in going for a walk or playtime. You may notice him start to hesitate when he climbs or descends the stairs, and he may show reluctance to jump or run. You may notice that he has difficulty when he stands, and there may be more obvious signs of joint pain and stiffness. He may also favor a limb, at some times more than others.

There may be secondary signs, such as behavior changes or weight gain due to being less active. If you notice any of these symptoms or are concerned, ask your veterinarian for an arthritis examination. Once a diagnosis has been given and the spread of the disease has been established, you will be able to start a plan of treatment for your dog.

Treatment of arthritis in dogs is fairly similar to treating arthritis in humans. Being overweight can exacerbate arthritis symptoms, so you will need to ensure that your dog undergoes a suitable diet and exercise regimen to reduce excess weight. Some have found that encouraging your dog to swim and paddle in sea water can reduce symptoms and swelling.

Your veterinarian may prescribe Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to reduce the pain and halt the progression of the disease. You can also purchase treatments from pet stores, such as supplements containing Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate or Omega fatty acids, such as Synflex Glucosamine Arthritis Formula for pets. These have been proven to reduce symptoms of dog arthritis. Always consult your veterinarian regarding any remedies you intend trying, and never be tempted to give human medication to your dog, as these could be harmful to his health.

As with humans, a healthy lifestyle will help to prevent your dog developing arthritis later in life. Don’t let him become overweight- ensure he has a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. This could also benefit you too! Giving him a supplement of Glucosamine may ensure that his joints are kept flexible and slow any rate of deterioration.

Keep a close eye on any changes in his behavior or tell tale signs that his health may be changing. Remember though, if your dog does develop arthritis, with appropriate treatment he can still live a full and happy life.
